Some of the most popular islands in the Bahamas are the Exumas. Stretching over 120 miles, this ultimate travel destination is filled with white sands, deep blue holes, and weeks worth of activities and places to explore. Whether you’re looking for a fast paced day trip, or to charter a flight in to spend some time as a group, Great Exuma and the surrounding cays will definitely be a location you remember forever.
When it comes to a unique experience, we’re not sure you can beat hanging out with the swimming pigs on Big Major Cay. Affectionately known as Pig Beach, this little slice of heaven is on an island where no people live. Many days, you might even have the beach to yourself.
Legend has it the pigs were dropped off by sailors a long time ago, with plans for a barbecue later on. Fortunately for the pigs and us, that never happened, and they have made it their home ever since. You might bump into a few cats and goats as well!
Moria Harbour Cay National Park
13,440 acres of untouched Bahamas habitat await you here. A popular birding spot, the park holds ospreys, terns, nighthawks and other species. There are plenty of dunes to explore, as well as grass seabeds, and for the kayaker, mangrove lined creeks. A definite eco-tourist paradise.
Staniel Cay Yacht Club
Here’s the place to stay if you’re in the area a while. From fine dining to first class accommodations, the Staniel Cay Yacht Club is beautiful, and right in the middle of all the action. In fact, it’s where you’ll have lunch on our Staniel Cay Day Trip!
Made famous by the James Bond film Thunderball, the grotto is an amazing place for diving and snorkeling. It’s another stop on our day trip, primarily because of its beauty and location.
If you want to go into the underwater grotto itself, you’ll need to keep an eye on the tides. You can snorkel at low tide, but a high tide will call for diving gear.
Fly Fishing for Bonefish
Ask any fly fisher and they’ll tell you catching a bonefish on a crab or shrimp pattern is near tops on the bucket list. There’s a ton of places in Exuma to try your hand at this. If you’re looking to sneak out for an afternoon (or full day) of fishing, this is one of the best places in the Bahamas to do so.
Not into fly fishing? There’s plenty of charters and captains around to take you offshore as well!
Compass Cay Nurse Sharks
Another stop on our 5 Star Staniel Cay day trip is Compass Cay. Here, you can swim with the “friendly” and passive nurse sharks. Why not create your own Shark Week, and do something you can talk about at every dinner party for the rest of your life?
Given all of the above, you can see why Exuma is becoming a highly desirable honeymoon and destination wedding venue. There’s tons of places to stay and have your ceremony. Your guests will never run out of things to do, and they’ll remember your special day for the rest of their life.
That’s what a great wedding is all about, right?
Ask us about our charter service from Fort Lauderdale to Staniel Cay. We can get all your guests to the island worry free!
